Couples tell me their venue and I go and research it, every time. Emma and Paul told me they had fallen in love with a brand new barn out near Northallerton, so I did what I always do and looked it up. The site was there. The venue was not. Every photograph on it was a CGI render, because the barns were still being built.

The VenueWhat High Brockholme Barns actually looks like
- iWhere it is. Danby Wiske, a few minutes from Northallerton, with the Cleveland and Hambleton Hills across the view. A family farm turned into a wedding venue.
- iiHow new it is. Building started in 2023 and the first weddings were held in summer 2024. Emma and Paul married here in its first year, which is why a High Brockholme Barns wedding had almost no real photographs online when they booked.
- iiiThe Great Barn. Oak trusses, stone walls and clean modern surfaces. It is a big room, and a big room with good bones is a gift on a wedding day.
- ivScale. Up to three hundred in the evening and accommodation on site, so nobody is watching the clock for a taxi.
A Real Brockholme DayEmma & Paul, the first year
Photographing a venue nobody has photographed yet is a different job. There is no shot list handed down by ten other photographers, and no couple's Pinterest board of the same three corners.

They booked a render
Emma and Paul saw the drawings, saw what it was going to be, and put their day on it. By the time I turned up, the building had caught up with the pictures.

Nothing was worn in yet
New venue, new everything: clean surfaces and none of the wear that older barns carry. It is a modern barn rather than a weathered one, and that changes how you light it.

The room does the work
Oak and stone and height. With a room like that you place people and let the building be the backdrop, instead of hunting for a corner that works.

I will be back
I said at the time that this would be a venue I photograph again and again, and I meant it.
