A Spring Wedding at Wood Hall

Laura and Mike's Wood Hall wedding. Vows at Saint Peter's Church in Sicklinghall, a vintage Rolls up the road, and one break in the weather that turned into a rainbow over the valley.

Two locations and a forecast that couldn't make its mind up. Laura and Mike took their vows in the village church at Sicklinghall and had everything after that at Wood Hall, near Wetherby. Church for the ceremony, country house for the rest of the day.

  • iA church with light in it. St Peter's is small and red sandstone, with a wooden wagon ceiling and clear glass down the nave. Most village churches make me fight for an exposure. This one hands it over.
  • iiThe terrace and the Wharfe valley. Wood Hall sits on Trip Lane at Linton, high above the valley, built as a country retreat for the Scott family. The stone back terrace has a balustrade and looks straight down the valley. That is where the rainbow turned up.
  • iiiThe Italian garden. Clipped hedges, gravel paths, stone steps, an arched gate with ironwork in it, blossom on the trees in spring. We used it the moment we arrived, which is what it is there for.
  • ivSomewhere to go when it turns. Wood-panelled rooms, the Drawing Room lounge, the Georgian Restaurant, and a staircase people naturally gather on. Wood Hall is licensed for ceremonies as well, indoors and out, so ask the team which areas are licensed now if you want the whole day on one site. A Real Wood Hall DayLaura & Mike, spring

Here is how the day ran.

  • Saint Peter's, Sicklinghall

    Daffodils out along the churchyard path and guests filing in through the gate. Rev. Stroma McDermott took the service. Inside, the light was already doing the work for me, so I stayed at the back and let it.

  • Confetti at the door

    Everybody funnels through the arch outside the church door, so that is where the confetti goes. They stepped out, got covered, and it was over in seconds. Nobody needed telling.

  • The Rolls

    A vintage Rolls-Royce Phantom, navy over cream. I like a car that makes people slow down and enjoy the bit in between.

  • The gap in the weather

    We reached Wood Hall under heavy cloud and I asked whether they minded going straight out. They didn't. We did the Italian garden and the terrace before either of them had a drink, and the rainbow came up over the valley behind them while we were out there. Rainbows are awkward to photograph and quick to go. That one held on. It looked cinematic, the two of them up there with the weather doing as it pleased.

  • Back to the guests

    Then indoors into the noise, with everyone waiting for them. A violinist playing in the corner of a panelled room, drinks in the bar, family gathered on the staircase. That part of the day needs nothing from me.
