Bethany & Lewis – Villa Farm York Wedding

When I first answered the phone to Christopher’s mum, who was in charge of booking a wedding photographer for this colourful wedding, she told me two things. The first was that Chelsea and Christopher’s wedding wasn’t going to be the usual affair. She asked, “How do you feel about that?” She went on to tell me that Christopher and Chelsea are very rock ‘n’ roll.
I SAID, "THAT'S OKAY BECAUSE I AM ROCK 'N' ROLL TOO!" AND I ADDED, "SIGN ME UP!" SHE REPLIED, "BUT THEY ALSO DON'T LIKE HAVING THEIR PICTURE TAKEN." I SAID AGAIN, "SIGN ME UP! I LOVE A CHALLENGE!"
Christopher and Chelsea’s wedding was a South Yorkshire rock ‘n’ roll spectacular, set on a beautiful farm in Rotherham. The wedding had it all: an outdoor ceremony, a big marquee with a stage, and a band playing emo rock punk indie hits. A collection of beautiful, chaotic guests surrounded by their loved ones, family, and friends made this wedding something special. The photos I produced from this wedding are some of my favourites from last wedding season.
Personally, I love a good DIY wedding. When I say DIY, I don’t mean that as an insult. DIY, to me, is a wedding that’s organised by the wedding family. A lot of the DIY weddings that I photograph now aren’t DIY in the traditional sense. In fact, the budget can often be more than what you’d expect if you got married in a hall or hotel. You know, the norm.
This was definitely the case for Chelsea and Christopher’s wedding. One of the funny things I remember about this wedding was the largest disco ball I have ever seen in my life, probably the size of a small car!
My day started with meeting Chelsea at her parents’ house with the bridal party, all getting ready outside in the garden. Oh my God, I love summer weddings. From the moment I arrived, I could tell straight away that this was going to be fun. There was lots of banter, jokes, laughter, and a few little glasses of wine, beer, and Chelsea’s favourite rum.
Pretty soon, it was time for Chelsea to make her way to the wedding venue, but she did this in style. A VW camper van picked Chelsea up, along with her wedding party, and took her to the farm where she was going to get married. I bloody love VWs. In fact, I still drive a VW Golf now. There’s just something about Volkswagen that I love. Taking pictures of the VW campervan was a must for me. I didn’t know it at the time, but this was what we would use for many of the bride and groom pictures, and I think they turned out amazing.
Once we arrived back at the farm, I was told that the farm had a family connection to Chelsea – a great uncle. Just another little thing that made this wedding even cooler.
The outdoor ceremony was spectacular. They did a sand blessing and danced down the confetti aisle. What a wedding!
If I’m honest, “South Yorkshire wedding photographer” is not something you would usually associate with me. I’m more North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, and the Northeast. But South Yorkshire is a spectacular place, and I love the people. They’re always up for a laugh, and this was definitely the case at Chelsea and Christopher’s wedding. Her friends and family were always up for a joke and a laugh, which is my kind of people.
If you’re planning your DIY rock ‘n’ roll wedding, come and speak to me. It’s safe to say I love photographing this sort of wedding. A break from the usual grand hall or hotel weddings, it’s nice to do something that’s a little less formal, a little more rock ‘n’ roll, and a bit more edgy.
