Whitby Elopement Photography

Elopements in Whitby are on the rise, with more couples opting for intimate and private ceremonies over traditional, grand weddings. Whitby has emerged as a top choice for eloping couples from across the UK. This coastal town, renowned for its rich history, natural beauty, and a touch of quirkiness, offers a unique backdrop for those seeking a memorable elopement experience.

In the previous wedding season, I had the privilege of photographing two remarkable elopements in Whitby. This blog post aims to take you on a journey through the possibilities when you choose to elope to Whitby.

Darren & Clare's Whitby Elopement

During their wedding day, I spent approximately three hours with Clare and Darryn. Despite the brief duration, our time together was filled with joy, and I had the opportunity to capture numerous beautiful moments for this wonderful couple.

My first encounter with Darryn and Clare took place at their hotel in Sandsend, just outside Whitby. They had chosen to stay in one of the most enchanting hotels in the area: Raithwaite Hotel. Although the hotel no longer hosts weddings, it remains one of the area’s most spectacular accommodations, with its exquisite gardens, which played a significant role in our bride and groom photoshoot.

My responsibility at the hotel was to document the journey of the newlyweds as they made their way to the Whitby Registry Office. Darryn and Clare decided to make a stylish entrance with matching black Rolls-Royces, and I was genuinely impressed by the elegance of these two cars.

For those considering an elopement, it’s worth noting that you’ll require at least two witnesses. In the case of Darryn and Clare, their friends who worked at Raithwaite Hotel gladly stepped in to serve as their wedding witnesses.

A short car ride brought us to the Whitby Registry Office. The journey from Raithwaite Hotel to the registry office was brief, taking only about five minutes to cover the 2.5-mile distance.

Whitby Registry Office Wedding Ceremony

The Whitby Registry Office may surprise you. It’s a simple, modern building, which differs from the expected image of an old, historic structure. Its accessibility and charm come not just from the venue but also from the genuinely friendly staff who conduct ceremonies. These registrars are among the kindest I’ve encountered, and I’ve had the privilege of getting to know them better through the numerous weddings I’ve photographed at Whitby Sneaton Castle.

Wedding Pictures Next to the Sea

Following the wedding ceremony, the newlyweds made their way back to Raithwaite Hotel, with a brief stop for a photoshoot near the sea in Sandsend.

The Most Amazing Bride and Groom Shoot at Raithwaite Hotel

After capturing some stunning coastal bride and groom wedding pictures, we returned to our starting point at the hotel. The gardens at Raithwaite Hotel are undeniably some of the most breathtaking I’ve ever seen. It’s regrettable that the hotel no longer hosts weddings, as the setting is truly exceptional.ther.
