The days I remember most weren't at hired venues. They were private estate weddings around Tadcaster — a marquee or yurts on the lawn, vows at the village church, a day built for one family and the people they love. Three of those are mine, plus four more up the road at Hornington Manor. Seven in the area.
Private-land weddings work differently, and photographing them well means knowing that. There's no venue coordinator, no house photographer's routine, no "this is where everyone stands". There's a field, a family, and a day that has never been run before. That's exactly why I love them.

The morning, at home
Preparations happen where the wedding does — no travel, no hotel corridors, and the pictures start in rooms that actually mean something to you.

The church
Both blogged weddings married at St Andrew's in Newton Kyme. A village church full of your people is its own kind of grand, and I photograph it without flash and without getting in the way.

Back to the land
The drive home is part of the day — the Cassons did it aboard a vintage York Pullman bus — and then the estate takes over: drinks on the lawn, the marquee waiting, the whole place yours.

The evening, unscripted
At the Watsons', singing waiters ambushed the reception and the tempo never dropped. On private land the evening runs exactly as long and as loud as the family wants.
"Mr Watson was best man at the Cassons' wedding before he booked me for his own. Around Tadcaster the weddings pass from family to family by word of mouth — which is exactly how it should work when the venue is somebody's home."

- Things go wrong at home weddings, don't they? Sometimes — at the Watsons' the rings were still in a car at the church. Days like these need a photographer who keeps calm and keeps shooting; the story ends up better for it.
