Twilight Steam Event at Elsecar Heritage Railway
More Sunlight than Twilight
Being from Wakefield, I thought I would already know about this Little Gem of History Near Barnsley, Pretty much on my Doorstep, but, I didn’t.
It’s a shame that places like Elsecar Heritage Railway don’t appear on people’s radars as much as they should……
I am a member of Wetherby Camera Club and a few weeks ago I got asked by a fellow member if I fancied going to take some pictures of steam trains. Of course, I said yes. I was expecting, when I questioned him further on the matter, to be told this event would be at one of the more famous Heritage Railways like the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) or another big boy. So I was stunned when I found out that the location was so close to where I come from and that I had no idea that this location existed.
The Event name was called Twilight Steam , but lucky for me the weather was amazing for this time of year (OCTOBER). The funny thing is I heard one of the organizers apologize for the weather “we weren’t expecting it to be this bright at this time” he said as we all were treated to some amazing autumn late evening sunshine.
To be honest, it would have been any train enthusiast dream come true , The Train Driver and Guards had the train performing for us! Going up and down the tracks creating steam on cue! We got to ride in the guard’s box too , this is where I got my best two pictures , the two guards looking out of the window basically been the eyes of the train driver, as the train was going backward down the track at the time of taking these shots.
I could go on forever about how much I enjoyed this event, but I am a photographer and I will let my pictures do the talking for me.
But please if you get the chance to visit the Elsecar Heritage Railway do so you won’t be disappointed.
